Text:- 2 Peter 2:19
A. Definition of Materialism:
1. Materialism can be defined as having a constant concern over material possessions and wealth; a great or excessive regard for worldly concerns.
2. It is having material substances in the aggregate.
B. Value of Materialism in Society:
1. Its dictates peoples’ joy, happiness, success and desirability.
2. Its dictates where to be enroll for any societal functions.
3. Its symbolically dictates the pace of every ceremony both religious and secular.
4. Its generally acceptable on any face of life.
5. Some people create value for material acquisition than other important goals.
C. Why do we need Materialism:
1. Its gives us sense of belonging to the society.
2. To be happy and comfortable in life.
3. To prevent us from any hazardous situation.
4. To cover our nakedness.
5. It adds to our beauty.
D. Effects of Materialism:
1. It promotes people negative feelings like lust, selfishness, jealous, hopelessness or inferiority complex.
2. It takes peoples’ heart away from God.
3. Its causes people to have personal satisfaction but not contented.
4. It causes people to build up a personal ego.
5. It destroys lives.
E. Types of Materialism:
1. Clothes.
2. Jewelries.
3. Cars.
4. Houses.
5. Teddy bear.
6. Living an extravagant life.
F. Materialism to Christian:
1. It’s a need not a desire.
a. It covers our body i.e. clothes.
b. It adds to our beauty.
c. It prevents us from any hazardous thing.
d. It prevents our sense of belonging in the society.
e. It promotes our joy, happiness in the society.
G. Why do we Shun Materialism as Christians:
1. It takes the place of God in our lives.
2. For us not to be lured to do evil. e.g. Rachael in Genesis 31-34.
3. That we may be free like Elijah.
4. That we may not be slave to our own desire. See 2 Peter 2:19.
5. That we may be contented.
6. For us not to be luxurious in life.
7. Not to disobey God. See Deuteronomy 22:5.
8. For us not to be polluted before God. See Genesis 35:4; Joshua 7:13.
H. Those that fell the Victim of Materialism in the Bible:
1. Rachael in Genesis 31:34.
2. Demas in 2 Timothy 4:10.
3. Balaam in Numbers 22-24.
Prayer Points:-
1. I command every worldliness in me, get out of me and die by fire now, in the name of Jesus Christ.
2. Help me oh Lord my God to reject being controlled by lifestyle of the world henceforth by fire, in the name of Jesus Christ.
3. Oh Lord God, help me to be conscious that I am in the world but not of the world, in the name of Jesus Christ.
