WEDNESDAY 11TH APRIL, 2018 MORNING PRAYER DEVOTION
SCRIPTURE READING:– NUMBERS 25
TOPIC:- NEVER TRUST BALAK
TEXT:- NUMBERS 24:10
Balak was the king of Moab, and the meaning of his name was waste or lay waste. It also means devastator; a destroyer, an emptier.
That is to say according to his name and his deed, it can be concluded that he was a man who lay to waste and destroy anyone that stands on his way with evil jealously.
You will remember that the city called Moab came to existence through immorality and an incest committed by the eldest daughter of Lot, the nephew of Abraham. See Genesis 19:30-38.
So, it wasn’t a surprise that Balak was their king. Frightened by the king of the lands of the Amorite and Bashan, the king of Moab and Midian are implacable foes for many generations, and they united for the common purpose of attacking the Israelites.
Balak the new king of Moab had been put in charge of the plans. He decided that the only way to destroy the victorious Jews was to outdo them in magic by a spell stronger than theirs. This made Barak therefore sent messenger to Balaam, the greatest magician and also a powerful soothsayer of those days, asking him to come over to Moab in order to curse the Israelites, whom he said were threatening to overthrow their lands.
At last, Balaam got there, but instead for him to curse them as agreed, it was blessings, he was blessing the children of Israel, saying, “how can I curse whom God has not cursed?” See Numbers 23:8.
By this, Balak was really angry and he ordered Balaam to return home. But before he left, he told Balak that the only way to harm the Israelites was to seduce them into sin, for then will God punish His people.
Later on, the king of Moab and Midian acted upon this shrewd advise of Balaam. And many among the children of Israel fell for this, and it caused thousands of the Israelites to die.
