SUNDAY 29TH APRIL, 2018 MORNING PRAYER DEVOTION
SCRIPTURE READING:- JOB 1
TOPIC:- NEVER GIVE SATAN A CHANCE
TEXT:- JOB 1:7
Satan means, contrary; adversary; enemy; accuser; Lucifer, [bringing light]. The Hebrew word Satan means “an adversary, one who resists.” It is translated as “Satan” eighteen times in the old testament, [fourteen of those occurrences being in Job 1-2, the others in 1 Chronicles 21:1 and Zechariah 3:1-2].
What are the other names ascribed to Satan? Lucifer, devil?” Satan is called devil. He is also called an “enemy” or “adversary”.
His personal name, “Satan,” means “adversary.” This name indicates Satan’s basic nature: he is the enemy of God, of all God does, and of all God loves. He is also known as the deceiver who leads humanity astray.
In the Hebrew Bible, Satan is primarily “an” or “the” accuser or adversary. In some later Jewish writings and in the New Testament, Satan is described as a more malevolent entity opposed to God, also called the devil, who possesses abhorrent qualities.
Satan is a spiritual being who led a heavenly revolt against God and was subsequently cast down into the earth. Sometimes “devil” is a figure appearing who brings evil and temptation, Luke 10:18.
He is also called “the devil” in the New Testament. The word “devil” means “false accuser” or “slanderer.” Satan plays this role in Job 1–2 when he attacks Job’s character.
In Matthew 12:24, the Jews refer to Satan as “Beelzebul,” an epithet derived from “Baal-Zebub” [lord of the fly]. A false god of the Philistines in Ekron, 2 Kings 1:2, 3, 6.
Other titles of Satan include the tempter, [1 Thessalonians 3:5], the wicked one, [Matthew 13:19, 38], the accuser of the brethren, [Revelation 12:10].
And also three titles that point to Satan’s authority in this world:1. The ruler of this world, John 12:31.
2. The god of this age, 2 Corinthians 4:4.
3. The prince of the power of the air, Ephesians 2:2.
In 2 Corinthians 11:14 says that, Satan transforms himself into “an angel of light,” a description that highlights his capacity and inclination to deceive.
The name “Lucifer,” which means “morning star,” is used here to describe someone who sought to overthrow God’s very throne in Ezekiel 28:11-19.
Although Satan is generally viewed as having negative characteristics, some groups have very different beliefs. Some religious groups teach that he originated as an angel, or something of the like, who used to possess great piety and beauty, but fell because of hubris, seducing humanity into the ways of falsehood and sin, and has power in the fallen world.
Believers need to exercise care about anger, so as “not to give the devil a foothold” [Ephesians 4:26]. They are to put on God’s full armor so as to stand against the devil’s schemes. With the shield of faith they are to thwart his “flaming arrows” [Ephesians 6:11, 16].
Ultimate victory comes by “the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, ” as the devil is cast down from heaven to the earth, Revelation 12:11.
Believe me, with all those deeds of Satan, and more so, he has been destined for hell. And his preparing to take his victims there. You must rise in holy anger, and say no to Satan now, and forever.
