Topic:- God Is A Consuming Fire
Text:- Deuteronomy 4:24
In this physical world, fire can be our friend or our foe. Fire can bring us comfort or tragedy. It is the same in the spiritual realm.
This startling description of God as a “consuming fire” is found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, the Word of God.
When Moses exhorted the children of Israel to be obedient to the Word of God, he said to them, “The Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.” See Deuteronomy 4:24.
In the New Testament, the writer to the Hebrews, quoted Deuteronomy 4:24 and said, “Our God is a consuming fire.” See Hebrews 12:29.
Most people do not think of God in this way. It is preferable to think of God as a loving and kind God, which He is.
But, God is also a “consuming fire”. This description of God, as a consuming fire, is a description of His very nature.
“Consuming fire” is God’s holiness manifested in judgment. God’s glory, God’s holiness is likened to a devouring fire in. See Exodus 24:16,17.
God’s judgment is described as a consuming fire to destroy Israel’s enemies in the Promised Land.
In Deuteronomy 9:3, It is true that “God is love” and thus He is a loving God. But, He will not be a loving God at the expense of His holiness.
God is holy and thus He must judge and consume everything that is contrary to His holy will.
God is intolerant of evil and of all that is inconsistent with Himself. Holiness is an attribute of God. It is His nature to be holy. God’s purity is absolute. His righteousness and justice is inflexible. His hatred of sin is uncompromising.
Every person who remains unsaved and thus still in their sins are exposed to the righteous wrath of a sin hating holy God. This “consuming fire” is God’s essential holiness.
Sinners should indeed fear and tremble at the prospect of God’s impending judgment. Notice that God is He is a living God, not a concept of the imagination of religious people. See Hebrews 10:31.
We live in a “sin saturated” society and thus there is no abhorrence of evil or of the sinful lives of those around us. Man sins with impunity because he does not believe in God or he does not fear God. See Romans 3:18.
Furthermore, man does not really believe he is accountable to God and that he will one day be judged for his sins.
If you fail to receive God’s Savior and the salvation He freely offers you then you must meet God as a consuming fire and be exposed to His wrath and judgment. See John 3:36.
Prayer Points:-
1. Oh Lord God, let Your consuming fire burn sin totally from the source in my life henceforth, in the name of Jesus Christ.
2. Oh Lord God, purify me with Your consuming fire, and thereby make me holy henceforth, in the name of Jesus Christ.
3. Thou consuming fire of God, go in any length and consume all the consumables in my life, in the name of Jesus Christ.
4. I command the consuming fire of God to always surround me and my family henceforth for Your protection, in the name of Jesus Christ.
5. Blood of Jesus, laminate my life, in the name of Jesus Christ.
6. I silence the voice of sickness speaking against my life, in the name of Jesus Christ.
7. Let the blood of Jesus immunize me from every infirmity, in the name of Jesus Christ.
