WEDNESDAY 4TH JULY 2018 MORNING PRAYER DEVOTION
SCRIPTURE READING:- JOB 1:1-20
TOPIC:- FIRE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN [2]
TEXT:– REVELATION 20:9
God sent fire from heaven several times in history. The Bible records of the remaining instances are:
6. Fire came down from heaven to consume the sacrifice that David offered: fire from heaven is not exclusively a means of judgment. This fire came down from heaven to consume the sacrifice that David offered on the threshing floor of Araunah, the Jebusite. In David’s case, God was forgiving David’s sin in conducting a census and halting a plague in Israel. He was also choosing the place where the future temple would be built. See 1 Chronicles 21:26.
7. Fire fell from heaven to consume the sacrifice at the dedication of the temple: fire consumed the sacrifice at the dedication of the temple, in the presence of King Solomon and the people of Israel. In Solomon’s case, God was consecrating that location as the place where His name would dwell forever. The people’s reaction was to worship the Lord and say, “He is good, His love endures forever.” See 2 Chronicles 7:1-3.
8. Fire fell from heaven and destroyed Job’s flocks: this was a direct attack from Satan, but, as the earlier part of (Job 1), it explains that Satan was acting with the permission of God. It was a tragedy allowed by God, and, in the end, brought glory to God. And also on the other side of Job’s trials, Job was blessed with doubles. See Job 42.
9. Furthermore, the fire of God came down from heaven through Solomon when he was dedicating the newly constructed temple of God. After his prayer, fire came down as an answer to his prayer and a sign of the acceptance of the sacrifice by the Lord. See 2 Chronicles 7:1-10.
10. Jesus that came from heaven to baptize people with fire. Interestingly, during Jesus’ earthly ministry, two of his disciples, James and John, wanted to call down fire from heaven in judgment of a Samaritan village that did not welcome the Lord. Jesus, however, “turned and rebuked them.” He had not come “to condemn the world, but to save the world” (John 3:17). Eventually to fulfill God’s purpose, (Matthew 3:11; Luke 3:16), fire came down from heaven on the day of Pentecost to perfect our salvation. See Acts 2:1-3.
11. In the end-times tribulation, the false prophet will cause fire to come down from heaven: this will serve as means of deceiving people into worshiping the antichrist. See Revelation 13:13.
12. Finally, fire came from heaven: at the end of the millenium, God promises that He will destroy the armies of Gog and Magog with fire from heaven. See Revelation 20:9.
